Watamu, GOF center:
God our Father Home for Needy Children in Watamu
Susan, who with her husband lives to care for needy children and fights to give them a future, runs God our Father Home for Needy Children. The home is in Watamu, a village along the Coast between Kilifi and Malindi. At the moment there are ninety-seven children in the home. Some of the children are orphans, others are abandoned or come from families that were not able to take care of them.

The project is expanding and the home will move to a new centre in Watamu, that Susan and her staff are building. The home gets donations from tourists who visit Watamu and find their way to “God our Father’s” home. Besides these donations “GOF” is very creative in ways to get income for the centre. They have started an Internet café in the village and farming in the compound of the new center.

Rukia Suleiman, Zawadi Tailoring College and Little Shinging Stars Nursery School:
Rukia Suleiman, the founder of the Zawadi self help group has always worked hard to get things done. She is committed to work in her community and to challenge problems. In the last months of 2008 she has built, with help from Wanawa and a volunteer, her own nursery school and tailoring college that started running January first of 2009.

The nursery school will help to prepare children for primary school. Children from poor families in villages often start their education with a big disadvantage in English language, which they’ll never make up later in school. The Little Shining Stars nursery schools aims to tackle this.

The tailoring college helps girls and young women to get skills to make them economic independent. Girls and young women who are economic independent are better able to make decisions that will benefit their and their families’ circumstances and health.

Both projects have just started and still a lot needs to be done.
Are you enthusiastic? Do you have skills and/or ideas to help Rukia and her staff to develop the nursery school and the tailoring college you’re welcome!

Shariani Secondary school:
To have real opportunities children need to go to secondary school. There is one secondary school in Shariani where Rukia is involved. Together with the headmaster they are striving for the best education they can offer. The Shariani Secondary school has a huge computer lab and they are looking for assistance in computer lessons. You can be the solution for their challenges. Are you an expert and willing to put our efforts to share your knowledge?

St. Pauls Children Care Centre:
Jayne is the daughter of Mary, who started St. Paul's children care center. Mary passed away and her daughter is bravely continuing her mothers dream. The start has been very hard, Jayne is happy she is getting volunteers to assist her in many ways. You can stay at the guesthouse that they locally run.

Moving the Goal Posts:
Girls and women in Kilifi District are some of the world's poorest and most disadvantaged people. Low retention in school, early and unwanted pregnancies and vulnerability to HIV/AIDS trap them in a cycle of poverty. Moving the Goalposts Kilifi (MTGK) uses local and youth centred approaches to tackle these issues ensuring girls' participation as leaders and decision makers.

The project uses football to develop essential life skills - confidence, leadership, self esteem - of vulnerable young women. Football also provides a unique entry point for reproductive health, human rights and economic empowerment initiatives. If you want to volunteer with Moving the Goalposts you can come up with a clear plan how you can contribute.
